CHAPTER TWENTY THREE

Willow Irwin woke to the steady hum of tires on asphalt. She struggled to open her eyes, her lids heavy as iron. Her surroundings appeared as a dark blur. As she lifted her head, a wave of nausea hit her. She swallowed hard. Choked back the bile. Her eyes fluttered closed again.

The bed beneath her rocked. A gentle sway. The memory of lying on the porch swing, her head tucked into her grandmother’s lap, flooded her mind.

Her grandmother had been dead for several years.

Where am I?

She coaxed her eyelids open, her hand pressed firmly on the mattress. Willing the room not to spin, she pushed herself up. She blinked away the haze that had blanketed her. The collar of her emerald-green puffer jacket brushed against her cheek.

Why am I sleeping in my coat?

Concentrating with all her might, she focused her vision.

As the shadows took shape around her, Willow realized she wasn’t in her bed. This wasn’t even her room. She was sitting in the rear of a car. She recognized the motion she felt now. The sensation of speeding down the highway.

Swinging her feet onto the floorboard, she leaned between the two front seats. It wasn’t just any car. It was her car. And it was definitely moving.

But there was no driver behind the wheel.

This can’t be happening.

Trying to make sense of the situation, she crawled into the front passenger seat. Her body felt drained as her fingers popped the door latch. Breathing deeply, trying to regain a bit of strength, she pushed against the door. It opened a short distance and then banged against something hard. Something that sounded like metal. But it was too dark to tell for sure.

My flashlight.

Willow tugged open the glove compartment. Sticking her hand inside, she identified the contents by touch. The flashlight had been shoved to the very back. She switched it on. A dim beam of light shot through the darkness. But it didn’t stretch far enough for her to get a clear view through the car’s windshield.

Damn it! I should have remembered to change the batteries.

She pushed against the passenger door again. The glow from the flashlight was just strong enough for her to see the metal wall that stood on the other side. She squeezed through the opening. Her jacket caught on the door latch and she jerked it loose.

Leaning against the car, using it for support, she made her way toward the rear end. She swept the light back and forth in front of her as she went. Her predicament had become clear.

Someone had driven the vehicle into a box truck and chained it to the floor. They were hauling it somewhere. A chop shop maybe? She knew that on the black market, individual parts sold for more than an intact car was worth. She could understand the reason someone wanted her sedan.

But why didn’t they let me go?

She fought to sort through the jumbled mess in her mind, trying to recall the moment she’d been carjacked. And then the memory hit her.
